Punk rock leather jackets
Johnny Ramone insisted that Ramones image should be based on his preference for the Schott ‘Perfecto’ model biker jacket - it made sense as it was a company working out of NYC. This was also the jacket that Brando wore in ‘The Wild One’ and rockers such as Joan Jett & The Blackhearts got kitted out there too.
Over in London though, it seemed to be a rite of passage for the punks to head to Lewis Leathers for their classic biker jacket. Certainly The Clash, The Damned and The Sex Pistols went.
There are a few differences in detail, but when you look at the famous wearers of the London-style jacket, it’s interesting to see Joey Ramone claimed as one of the London brand’s own… you have to wonder if this was another small protest against Johnny’s rules?
